What is Obsidian Butterfly Journeys
& Who Is it For?
Itzpapalotl Obsidian Butterfly Journeys offers ceremonial journeys to restore our sacred relationship with ancestral lands and matrilineal wisdom. We organize ancestral pilgrimage journeys for BIPOC in and near Guanajuato, Mexico.

This is especially an invitation for displaced Indigenous relatives in the diaspora who
feel called to a journey of connection & remembrance on ancestral lands.
Not as tourists but as descendants of this land.

Join us for an unforgettable journey of restoring our relationships
to land, memory and spirit.

Dr. Cristina Serna, founder of Itzpapalotl Obsidian Butterfly Journeys, Xicana Studies PhD and lifelong caminante on the path of ancestral remembering
I am a queer indigenous Xicana of Hñähñu (Otomi) & Chichimeca descent. I am from Guanajuato by way of Boyle Heights, CA. Soy nieta de las abuelas de esta tierra. Soy caminante. Camino para recordar.
I am the first born daughter of Mexican immigrant parents from Guanajuato. I live in San Miguel de Allende, a city that is part of my maternal ancestral lands. I like to say that I rematriated myself. To rematriate means to return to the Mother.

I have been teaching history and Xicana/o studies since 2001 y mí conciencia Xicana and relationship to earth, spirit, & ancestors guides this work.
I walk the Ñusta paqo path as an apprentice Pampamesayoq with the Q'ero Inca Apaza family lineage, a beautiful path that continually opens my heart to deepen my relationship with our pachamama. I have been following ancestral routes in Mexico through my personal and familial practice of pilgrimage for the past 20 years and Obsidian Butterfly Journeys is one of the ways I share what I have learned from the maestr@s and guides I have met en este bello camino serpentino.

I look forward to walking with you!
